Today I’ve partnered with the lovely Rachel from August & Co, and we’re sharing our favourite tips for styling your office space! For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a desk to call my own. As a kid, my dad built me this window seat and corner desk in my room. Throughout my high school and university years, I had this great frosted glass top Ikea desk. Today in my apartment, I’m lucky enough to have an entire room to call my office, and also with a desk built by my amazing dad!
Needless to say, I have some experience with styling a workspace and making it your own! It really doesn’t matter if you have a corner in your living room, a dedicated space in your bedroom, or a full room to call your office, you can – and should – create a wonderful space! Sitting down at your desk should bring you joy, inspire you, and motivate you to spend time in your office! ???? So here are my top tips on creating a space that does just that!
Inspiration Boards
I’ve had them all – magnet boards, cork boards, rose gold wire frames, but they all serve the same purpose, to showcase pictures, quotes, drawings, and notes that inspire you. On a board like this, it’s so easy to hang a little piece of paper, a business card, or a photo and to be always adding to your collection!
Gallery Wall & Framed Photos
Your space should be a reflection of who you are, and to me, my friends and family are a huge part of that! Surround yourself with photos that bring back happy memories and remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing! Put them in beautiful frames, and either hang them straight onto the wall, sit them on your desk, or hang a picture ledge and fill it up!
Decorative Items
I love picking out decorative items for my space, and I believe they should be things that mean something you! Whether it’s a beautiful gold foil print, a candle, a cute bowl, or a little figurine or object, take your time in picking out items that will be special and not feel like clutter.
Office Supplies
This is a classic, because you can’t go wrong with beautiful office supplies and stationary! I’ve loved having cute office supplies since I was a kid. Back then it was a 64-pack of gel pens from Costco (come on, you know what I’m talking about ????), and now it’s a lovely set of pencils and a fancy stapler. You want items that make you excited to sit down at your workspace and start creating!
Fresh Flowers or Greenery
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how much a bouquet of fresh flowers or a plant can liven up your space! It’s something pretty to look at, and a plant even freshens the air. It can be a few small succulents or a beautiful bouquet of hydrangeas, whatever works with your space!
Natural Light and/or Great Light Fixtures
I know this isn’t necessarily a “styling tip”, but it’s amazing the power of a window with sunlight pouring in! In my current office, I have my desk facing the window, and I just love it! The sunshine gives you energy, and makes you feel like you’re pretty much outdoors. I know it’s not always possible to station yourself next to a window, but if you can, put your desk there. Another great office element is a good light fixture! A nice desk lamp helps for when you’re still working long after the sun’s gone down ????
So there are my top tips for decorating your office space and making it a special place! Whether you work from home or not, you spend a lot of time at your desk and in your office. I know over the years I have spent countless hours sitting at my desks. And today nothing has really changed, between the days that I work from home, the online courses I work through, or my endless creative projects, I’m in my office at all hours of the day! Your desk and office have to be a space that inspires you, draws you in, and makes you happy!
